Does acrylic enamel need primer?

acrylic enamel paint

Acrylic paint usually requires the use of a suitable primer to ensure the best adhesion, corrosion resistance and durability.

Acrylic paint is a common single-component quick-drying topcoat that exhibits excellent light retention, color retention, weather resistance and decorative effects. It is widely used for coating outdoor or industrial environments such as steel structures, mechanical equipment, vehicles, and building exteriors.Although it has good adhesion on its own, when directly applied to metal or concrete substrates, it may still fail prematurely due to insufficient rust prevention or poor adhesion.

To enhance the performance of the overall coating system, the industry commonly adopts a multi-layer coating system consisting of "primer + intermediate coat (optional) + topcoat". The primer's function is to enhance adhesion, provide cathodic protection (such as zinc-rich primer) or shield corrosive media. While the acrylic enamel serves as the topcoat, mainly responsible for aesthetics and resistance to ultraviolet aging.

Common types of primers

The following are the commonly used primers for acrylic paints and their applicable scenarios:

  • Epoxy primer (such as epoxy zinc-rich, epoxy iron oxide)

Main features: High adhesion, excellent corrosion resistance, can provide cathodic protection

Applicable scenarios: Outdoor steel structures, bridges, storage tanks, ships

  • Polyurethane primer

Main features: Quick drying, good weather resistance, strong mechanical properties

Applicable scenarios: Construction machinery, transportation vehicles

  • Acrylic primer

Main features: Quick drying, good compatibility with topcoat

Applicable scenarios: Equipment surfaces with high decorative requirements

  • Alkyd primer

Main features: Low cost, easy to apply

Applicable scenarios: General mechanical equipment, indoor structures

(Additional Explanation)

Some product descriptions indicate that acrylic paint can be used in conjunction with epoxy primer and polyurethane primer; typical matching schemes include "epoxy primer + epoxy zinc-rich intermediate paint + acrylic paint" or "S53-31 polyurethane anti-rust primer + acrylic paint".

Acrylic paint is recommended to be applied with a primer, especially in situations with severe corrosive environments (such as in atmospheric conditions of grade C3 or above). Failure to use a primer may result in:
The adhesion decreases, and the paint film is prone to peeling;
The metal substrate rusts, affecting the service life;
The anti-aging ability weakens, and the loss of luster and powdering accelerate.
If only used for light protection or temporary decoration, and the substrate condition is good, clean and dry, it can also be used alone, but the long-term performance cannot be guaranteed.
