Floor paint
The most common problems with epoxy floor paint are peeling, delamination, blistering, poor drying, pinholes and shrinkage, depressions, and early damage caused by improper maintenance. These problems mostly result from inadequate base surface treatment, incorrect mixing ratios, environmental control failure, or construction process defects.
Epoxy floor paint (also known as epoxy floor coating) is widely used in industrial plants, underground garages, laboratories, hospitals, etc. It is favored due to its wear resistance, corrosion prevention, seamless surface, and easy cleaning properties. However, its performance highly depends on the construction quality and the condition of the base surface. A slight oversight can easily lead to functional or appearance defects.
The above problems can be prevented and resolved by controlling factors such as base surface treatment, coating thickness, and construction environmental temperature and humidity. If these problems occur, it is recommended to contact a professional team for repair and maintenance as soon as possible.
Problems in the application of epoxy floor paint
- Bubble formation: The main causes are excessive humidity on the base surface, uneven base surface, and excessively high ambient temperature during construction.
- Cracking: The main reasons are base surface contraction, uneven coating thickness, and low ambient temperature.
- Peeling: Weak base surface adhesion, poor coating adhesion, and excessive humidity in the construction environment can lead to coating peeling.
- Bumps and shell cracking: Insufficient base surface drying, gas accumulation beneath the paint film, and uncleaned impurities during paint film curing.
- Expansion joint cracks: Unaddressed gaps caused by thermal expansion and contraction of the foundation.
- Color separation and mottling on the paint surface: Poor material quality or improper addition of thinner during construction.
- Uneven surface, unevenness: Poor foundation, inadequate grinding of the base, poor material scraping, and poor construction of subsequent repair and sanding work.
- Shorter wear resistance time and easy damage: Insufficient material usage, cutting corners, and poor wear resistance performance of the material.
- Formaldehyde content issue:
Traditional floor paints and cement floor paints may contain formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Long-term exposure to it can lead to respiratory diseases, skin allergies and even cancer. However, with the improvement of environmental awareness and technological progress, there are now many low-formaldehyde or no-formaldehyde formula floor paint products available on the market for selection.
- Paint surface damage issue:
After a long period of use, the sports flooring may experience problems such as surface paint damage, peeling, loss of gloss, etc. The causes include not applying a primer or applying the paint before the primer is dry, using substandard paint, excessive wear due to long usage and prolonged exposure to sunlight, etc. The solutions include cleaning the floor surface, sanding the paint layer, and reapplying the paint, etc.
- Paint surface roughness issue:
If the paint used is old or the brush is not clean, and it is exposed to environmental pollution around, it will cause the paint surface to become rough. The solution is to ensure that the paint bucket and brush are clean before applying the paint. If using old paint, it should be filtered with paint filter paper.
Paint not drying problem: If the surface of the sports floor is greasy after painting or if the temperature in the venue is too low and the ventilation system is poor, it will cause the paint not to dry. The solution is to open the windows and doors for ventilation, and use a heater or air conditioner to raise the temperature and remove the moisture; if the surface of the panel paint is greasy, you can use a chemical paint remover or heating method to remove the paint, and then reapply the paint after the surface is wiped clean.
- Paint bubble problem:
If the gaps between the planks of the sports floor wood are cracked and there is air inside, or if moisture seeps into the paint layer on the back of the floor, it will cause paint bubbles. The solution is as follows: If there is air, first scrape off the bubble paint layer, fill the crack with resin, and then reapply the paint; if there is moisture, use a hot air sprayer to remove the bubbling paint, let the wood dry, and then reapply the paint.
- Paint peeling issue:
If the wood of the sports floor is rotten, the panels are not clean, or the paint quality is substandard, it will cause paint peeling. The solution is as follows: For small areas of peeling, you can first use fine sandpaper to sand it, then apply putty, and finally reapply the paint; for large areas of peeling, you must first scrape off the paint surface and then reapply the paint.
The epoxy floor paint itself has excellent performance, but over 90% of the problems arise from the construction and maintenance processes - not the material itself is faulty, but "it wasn't done correctly". It is recommended to prioritize choosing those with full-process service capabilities (survey + design + construction + after-sales), and ensure that the construction team holds professional qualifications and has successful cases. If there are problems such as peeling or bubbling, one should first test the moisture content and adhesion of the base surface, and then decide whether to carry out local repair or completely remove and redo.
